The Milken Institute deserves real credit for convening a unique conference in Washington, D.C. each year to focus on the stated, singular mission of accelerating R&D in the area of disease. I attended this year’s gathering in September, and was genuinely recharged to see the ways this effort of the Milken Institute is different, and effective. With about 10,000 known diseases affecting human lives, and treatments for only 500, Milken asks everyone with significant resources to bring what they can to the table. That means researchers, big pharma, universities and institutes all in one place exchanging ideas and, ideally, stimulating federal funding. That’s smart, and, let’s hope, the path to faster cures.
